Stephen Douse was born in Nottingham and studied singing and piano at the Royal Academy of Music. Since leaving, he has pursued a diverse range of professional musical activities both in England and in countries including America, Japan, Holland, Switzerland, France and Germany.
Stephen specialises in the music of JS Bach and his contemporaries and his many performances of the role of Evangelist in the Bach Passions have included venues such as Westminster Abbey, The Anvil, Basingstoke (with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment), St John's, Smith Square and Guildford Cathedral. Recent projects have included Orff's Carmina Burana, Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle and a performance of HMS Pinafore at the BBC Proms, broadcast on television.
He has sung for Welsh National Opera, Kent Opera, The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, The London Savoyards and in May 2005 completed the world premiere of Lorin Maazel's '1984' at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, taking the role of the high tenor in the barbershop quartet. He sings for many of the leading vocal ensembles including the BBC Singers, the Apollo Singers and European Voices. In February 2005 he sang in a performance of Bernstein's Candide at the Royal Festival Hall, London with the Maida Vale Singers.
He is also a member of The Grand Union Orchestra (world music jazz) and performs with them as both vocalist and keyboard. He also enjoys teaching singing to actors and is currently working at East15 Acting School and is Head of Music at The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts.
