James Atherton

James Atherton is a musician of rare versatility. A former drummer for a Heavy Metal band he now combines his singing career with that of voicer of organ pipes at Nicholson and Co. Malvern and a busy conducting schedule, including his own professional consort and two choral societies, Tyndale and Leominster.

He has spent twenty years as a Lay Clerk singing in some of the finest choirs in the land including Winchester Cathedral and St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle where amongst many important occasions he sang for the wedding of HRH Prince Charles to Camilla Parker-Bowles. For the past nine years he has been a Lay Clerk at Tewkesbury Abbey singing week days with the world famous professional choir of Boys and Men.

On the concert platform James has sung with many of the country's finest orchestras, including BBC Symphony, LSO, RLPO, BBC NOW, Birmingham Symphony, Orchestra of the Swan and His Majestys Sagbutts and Cornetts to name a few. He also has a busy career as a consort singer having sung with most of the major outfits in England.

James is in demand as Evangelist for the great Bach Passions, recent and future performances include Lincoln, Chester, Ripon, Gloucester and Ely Cathedrals and LSO St. Luke's in London.

He has sung the role of Gerontius in Elgar's famous work several times, including in Braunschweig Cathedral in Germany, and has appeared as a soloist on television and radio in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and the USA. He has also been invited to sing in a concert of Bach Cantatas in Wellington Cathedral in New Zealand.

In his spare time James enjoys spending time with his children, playing golf (badly) and the organ (even worse!), cooking, and relaxing in the beautiful town of Tewkesbury where he lives in the shadow of the famous Abbey.
